Introduction:
The Foundation Degree is a modern, vocational, higher education qualification which blends together academic study with hands-on work-based experience. The course will equip students with the skills and knowledge to be successful in their career. Foundation Degrees are about lifting peoples` horizons and giving them the means to go forward in their professional working life.

This course will provide a route into Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management for anyone with both the ability and motivation to succeed, and is specifically designed for people who wish to undertake further study at a higher level. This also includes people who are employed and who wish to enhance their career prospects, or people wanting a career change. The Foundation Degree is a fantastic access route for those who may never have considered study at higher education level before. A career in Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management is very dynamic, challenging and rewarding. This programme has been carefully designed to meet the needs of any student wishing to embark on a management career in any sector of the Hospitality or Tourism industry.

Successful students may apply for progression to a BA (Hons) in Management in Hospitality or Management in Tourism at the University of Central Lancashire.

Study Mode & Location:
This programme will be studied on a full-time basis over two days per week for two years. Students studying should be employed within the Hospitality or Tourism sector. The course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:

Year 1 Modules
  • Food & Beverage Operations. Organisational Behaviour in Hospitality & Tourism Operations.
  • Academic & Personal Skills Development. Visitor Management.
  • Work Based Experience (minimum of 100 hours).
  • Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism Operations.
  • Business of Hospitality and Tourism.
  • Issues of culture and sustainability in Hospitality & Tourism.


Year 2 Modules
  • Sales Development and Merchandising in Hospitality and Tourism.
  • Human Resource Management.
  • The Changing Economy
  • Financial Management
  • Service Quality Management.
  • Safety Management.
  • Operations Management Research Project. Tourism Planning and Development.


In addition students will be given the option of studying the following industry specific qualifications:

  • Level 2 Food Safety
  • Level 3 Food Safety
  • Level 2 Health and Safety
  • BII
National Certificate Personal Licence Holders

These extra qualifications are offered to enrich the core programme and enhance employability within Hospitality and Tourism Industry.

Assessment:
The assessments for this course are balanced between written assignments, presentations, case studies and some end of module examinations. Students will be assessed module by module as they proceed through the course, with the final grade awarded being an average of the grades achieved over the course. Students will be required to maintain a Personal Professional Development (PPD) record, allowing them to track and monitor their academic and personal skills development during the course. All assessment criteria are made available to students through the module information packs for each module studied.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
The programme has been structured to meet the needs of the major functions in Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management and has been developed with career progression and professional recognition in mind. The qualification is recognised by major professional bodies and by employers in both the private and public sectors. Successful students may apply for progression to a BA (Hons) in Management in Hospitality or Management in Tourism at the University of Central Lancashire.

You will need to have an informal interview with an Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
