The Programme
Psychology is the study of people: how they think, act, react and interact. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and the thoughts, feelings and motivation underlying such behaviour.
Sociology allows for influences beyond the individual to be taken into account. Sociology will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the rapidly changing nature of contemporary society.

Modules are assessed by a variety of methods which include coursework, examinations presentations, seminars and research reports.
Module Descriptions
Research Methods - three modules of research methods will be undertaken. Research methods modules allow students to understand the process of research, carry out pieces of their own research, learn how to write up research reports. They also include the use of statistics which are done using computer software, SPSS.
Social, Developmental, Clinical and Learning Psychology - In the first year it allows for an introduction to the major areas in Psychology and also to the founding researchers. The stage two module continues with the same topics, however, it aims to specialise more and to bring the research up to date.
Physiological and Cognitive Psychology - This module introduces students to the brain and its functioning as well as the effects which different chemicals can have on the brain. It also looks at different cognitive processes such as memory and language.
Individual Differences - The study of intelligence and personality.
Sociological Imaginations - This provides an introduction to the ideas of sociologists by applying the principle of the sociological imagination to a number of social issues such as the family.
Social Transformations - This looks at how society has changed and how sociological theory can be understood in this context.
Social Change in a Modern World - A political look at the changes which have taken place in the modern world and how these can be understood within the sociological context.
Social Identities - How do we define and identify ourselves? This module will look at the way in which we build our identity and other judge identity, focusing on issues such as gender and ethnicity.
Entry Requirements
Mode of Study
Full time over two years.
Part time over three years.
Timetabled Days
Stage One of the full time offering will be on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Stage Two will be on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
The part time offering will take place on a Tuesday.
Costs
Students will be required to provide their own stationery and material to produce a conference style poster (A3 card and paper) as well as handouts for presentations. There will be a ?20 fee upon enrolment for photocopied materials.
Students will also be provided with a reading list and may wish to purchase books, more guidance on this will be given throughout the course. A USB pen would be useful.
Progression Careers
The FdSc course is a qualification in it's own right. However, students who successfully complete the course are able to progress to the University of Plymouth to undertake a final year in BSc (Hons) in Psychological Studies.
The areas of health and social care, teaching & education, customer service and human resource management are careers which are particularly relevant to this programme.
The FdSc Psychology with Sociology programme does not carry accreditation for the British Psychological Society which is a requirement for certain careers within psychology (eg forensic, educational, clinical etc). If you wish to pursue such a career you will be required to apply to stage two of the BSc (Hons) Psychology at the University of Plymouth to gain accreditation or complete a conversion course upon graduation.
