Foundation Degree Sport Coaching and Development Overview

The programme is particularly relevant to students wishing to develop practical skills in relation to coaching and instructing and who are interested in working within all levels of sports participation.

This course is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

To start this course, you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 160 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects.
  • Appropriate BTEC National Diploma with MM profile or Extended Diploma with MMP profile or above.
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related subject.
  • Other Level 3 qualification in a related subject.
  • Alternatively, we will consider your application if you have substantive experience in a relevant field.

We also normally require GCSE English language and maths at grade C or above: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that GCSE maths or equivalent is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Sport Studies (top-up) award or other programme beyond a Foundation Degree.

You may also be required to undertake a self-funded Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to undertaking this course.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

This is a two-year full-time course, normally delivered two days a week for 6 hours per day. You will also need to dedicate significant time to research and work outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include practical observations, laboratory reports, poster presentations, research projects, written assignments, oral presentations, time constrained assignments, literature reviews or portfolios. Where modules are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting.

The course requires you to have a work or voluntary placement, details of which will be discussed at interview.

Foundation degree graduates may seek employment in a range of related careers such as coaching, sports development, sports therapy, personal training, teaching or the uniformed services.

What can I go on to study?

You could opt to progress to the BA (Hons) Sport Studies top-up degree which will be delivered at Vision West Nottinghamshire College.

Alternatively, you could progress on to the BA (Hons) Sport and Exercise Study at the University of Derby, or other relevant programme at another institution, subject to entry requirements.
