What will you study on the Foundation Year in Performing Arts?
This programme comprises four 30-credit modules that are delivered through a combination of weekly and intensive engagement. Core knowledge and skills are embedded on a weekly basis in cohort and discipline-specific groups. Two intensive project modules, one group/one individual, allow you to focus in depth at a later point in the programme.
Teaching is delivered through workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. You also benefit from guest lecture series’ in the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, and visits to performances and other events in London.
As a student of this course you'll receive a free electronic textbook for every module.
ModulesPerforming Arts Exploration (30 credits) - Compulsory
This module provides you with fundamental written and oral communication skills required to study a performing arts-based subject (dance, music or theatre) at undergraduate level. This module aims to develop confidence and competence in the acquisition and use of academic English language skills, developing critical thinking and knowledge of discipline-specific vocabularies, forms and contexts. Weekly delivery.
Performing Arts Practice (30 credits) - CompulsoryThis module develops core skills in one of the performing arts-based subjects (dance, music or theatre). It aims to develop confidence and competencies of the individual and lays the foundation for the development of the skills required for discipline-based practice. Weekly delivery.
Cross-Arts Collaboration (30 credits) - CompulsoryYou will work in cross-discipline groups on a supported, collaborative project, to share and to explore the ways in which performing arts disciplines interact. This is an intensive project.
Writing Project (30 credits) - CompulsoryThis module provides the opportunity for you to choose a topic from a series of set questions, to research it and present findings in written form. This is an intensive project.
You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
