Course programme

Develop your specialist skills in caring for patients following burn injuries or plastic surgery. Learn about trauma and plastic, burns cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, as well as bariatric surgery. Enhance your ability to assess wounds, manage complications and support patient rehabilitation - at the same time expanding your career prospects.

Looking to enhance your specialist skills after having worked in a burns/plastic surgery setting for at least six months? Our course will help you learn to care for patients in the critical care setting who've experienced burns or plastic surgery, as well as their significant others.

You’ll explore the fundamental principles of caring for burns and the effects of plastic surgery, covering:

  • an introduction to burns
  • an introduction to cardiovascular and respiratory care in burns
  • an introduction to plastic surgery
  • reconstructive surgery
  • psycho/social needs
  • managing head and neck burns
  • hand trauma
  • rehabilitation
  • the ongoing management of burn injuries
  • an introduction to cosmetic surgery
  • wound assessment
  • the management of complications
  • bariatric surgery.

Several techniques and elements relate to both burns and plastic surgery. These include:

  • skin grafts
  • flaps
  • replantation
  • wound healing
  • wound management
  • psychology
  • social care
  • multidisciplinary care.

This is a complex area of practice, and our course will develop your ability to reflect on your own and others’ practice, taking into account the evidence base surrounding clinical techniques.

You’ll attend lectures and take part in skills workshops and scenario-based workshops. There'll be opportunities to apply your new knowledge and skills in your specialism.

We'll assess you on your understanding of theory as well as your practical skills. Therefore, you must have access to (and work with) both burns and plastic surgery service users. You’ll need to complete practice competencies and clinical hours relating to both burns and plastic surgery.
