The caster is a foundry technician who deals with the casting, the methods of casting and forming metals and the preparation of the models for the realization of the pieces. The foundry is the branch of metallurgy that deals with the production processes that make it possible to obtain metal objects by melting and casting metals in special shapes, that is, hollow objects that will give shape to the piece. The establishment where the aforementioned activities are carried out is also called a foundry. The pieces obtained are called castings or fusions. Casting is one of the oldest known processing technologies: the first tools found, obtained through a foundry, date back to 4000 BC. The foundry process can be divided into two macro-categories: transitional casting and permanent casting. The forming in transitory form can take place with the use of a permanent model, and this is the case of the foundry on the ground, or of a consumable model, and it is the case of the lost-wax casting and the policast. The earth foundry process has some fundamental characteristics, useful in choosing the type of component to be obtained. It is one of the most versatile processes and can be made with practically any type of metal or alloy. The range of pieces obtainable through foundry processes can vary greatly: from smaller objects with a decidedly simple geometry, such as ingots, to much more bulky and highly complex products, such as marine engines. It should be noted that in the case of particularly complex and bulky objects, such as the aforementioned engine for naval use,
