In 1973 Richard Morris identified the following seven figures as the key ‘Founding Fathers’: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. These men were leaders or the War of Independence/ American Revolution and had a large impact on the constitutional shape of the institutions of the new federal American state. Whilst they cooperated against the British each had a distinct set of ideas about the shape of the new nation. This course will explore these ideas and their practical effects.
We will examine: Washington; Franklin;; Hamilton jay; Jefferson; Madison; and Adams; in turn then consider their collective impact.
