The French Revolution remains one of the great turning points in modern history. Its drama, ideals and bloodshed
continues to fascinate generations of students and divide historians. This course will try to make sense of the
(sometimes confusing) events from 1789 to 1799 which include revolution, civil war, foreign invasion, State Terror,
political reaction and the emergence of Napoleon.

About this course

1) identify the main social and political changes that occurred in France between 1789 and 1799.
2) Identify and evaluate the contributions key individuals and groups made to the course of the French Revolution
3) Analyse and discuss primary and secondary documents.

Course programme

* the ancien regime in France: society, economics, politics
* the revolution of 1789
* the key areas of division in revolutionary France: war, the monarchy and the Catholic Church
* the end of the monarchy and the Terror
* the Thermidorian reaction.

A mixture of lecture, Q & A, source work, pair/group and class discussion. A comprehensive bibliography will be given at the beginning of the course. Also (brief ) reading materials will be given at the end of each session. Please note, that supplementary reading is not a course requirement, but you will get more out of the course if you do some extra reading.
