Melissa Needham

Melissa Needham

Tutor, Principal of the school

Melissa is founder of Prescott & Mackay and originally trained as a costume maker at Wimbledon School of Art before specialising in footwear at Cordwainers College. She first established the P&M shoemaking course in 1997 and has gone on to develop further classes in related design and making in both the UK and USA. In 2003 Melissa launched the Black Truffle boutique in London specialising in niche collections by shoe and accessory designers.

Prescott & Mackay 'Made in Britain' Factory Tour Series: Freed of London Factory Tour.

This unique factory tour provides you with the opportunity to explore the legendary craftsmanship of one of the most respected fashion manufacturing bases in the UK, which is not usually open to the public.

Freed of London was established in 1929. Today it is the only leading dance shoe manufacturer to produce mainly handmade dance shoes.

Freed dance and ballet shoes are used by some of the world’s most famous ballet companies and dancers.

Schedule:

10:30am: Students are welcomed by our tutor at London Fields train station.

11:00am-1:00pm: Visit to Freed of London in Hackney. The tour will cover the Ballroom and the Ballet sections. Students will be able to:

  • Learn how different machines are used in footwear production
  • See how Freed of London shoes are hand-crafted
  • Network with like-minded people
  • Gain first-hand experience with a leading shoe manufacturer.
