About this course
Build forms in clay combining making techniques
- Join thrown components,
- Make clay extrusions, build with and alter extruded forms.
- Make a press mould
- Use sprig and press moulds, exploring texture
- Use setters in the kiln to build unexpected and experimental forms, playing with balance.
- Explore high firing unglazed pieces.
- Decorate pieces with coloured slips, oxides and department glazes
- Apply glazes with advanced knowledge and confidence.
Old clothes and sensible footwear advised, you are welcome to bring your own tools but not essential. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. There is a charge of £2.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag.
Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Your tutor will advise you which tools to purchase.
Through weekly practical demonstrations, group and individual tuition during the sessions.

Course programme
The aim of the course is to develop hand building skills by introducing new making techniques, being encouraged to work outside of existing comfort zones; making unexpected and unplanned clay sculptures by joining made components playfully together; considering form and function, texture and decoration. Demonstrations will be given throughout as well as advice on building and decorating with slips and oxides before firing and glazing. A slide show will be given on contemporary ceramics.
