Description of course:
This subject deals with the personal level of communication and candidates own experience of cultural products and cultural practices. At AS it explores all aspects of self-concept and looks at theories of social pyschology linked to group interaction, investigating the reasons why we wish to be part of a group and how we are perceived by others. The cultural part of the course investigates aspects of contemporary lifestyle as represented by cultural products such as iPods and mobile phones, as well as cultural practices such as going to the cinema or music festivals or visiting shopping centres, and how all of these help to shape our identity. At A2 the students are required to demonstrate a broad awareness of contrasting theoretical approaches to the analysis and understanding of cultural production and consumption in contemporary society. Critical theories are studied in depth, for example Feminism, Marxism, and Post Modernism.

Progression opportunities and careers:
On completion of this course you will be well equipped to undertake Higher Education courses in Communication Studies, Cultural Studies, Social Psychology or Journalism. It provides a good background for careers in Public Relations, Human Resources, Teaching and Business.

Specific entry requirements:
GCSE English Language and Literature at grade C or above.

Advanced Level GCE courses are very different from GCSEs. Students need to be prepared to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and willingness to work. The number of students, and the wide range of schools they come from to study at Advanced Level GCE, ensures stimulating work and discussion groups.
