About this course

This course is aimed at students who are 19 years old and over, have not attained a Level 3 qualification in the past and are intending to go on to university to study an arts, humanities or social science subject.

No formal qualifications are required however communication and numerical skills will be explored during the interview process.

Access to Humanities (Level 3)
Course Content
Students are introduced to four Humanities subject areas: English, History, Psychology and Sociology.
Within each topic a range of themes and concepts will be considered - examples of which are outlined below:
History - 19th Century Wales; Stalin and Gorbachev; Political Ideologies
English - Creative Writing; Poetry Appreciation; Appreciation of a Novel
Sociology - Crime and Deviance; Social Class Today; Sociology of the Family
Psychology - Human aggression; Abnormal Behaviour; Memory; Conformity/Obedience
In addition, students are required to complete core modules in Numeracy, Communication, IT and Study Skills whilst also completing an Integrated Research Project.
Teaching/Assessment
Throughout the academic year students will gain credit via a continuous process of coursework assessment.
A variety of formal and informal assessment techniques will be employed including written essays, case studies, debates, short stories, research projects and presentations.
Progression
The goal of the course is to develop the skills necessary for study at Degree level. Therefore the natural progression is onto a Degree programme in English, History, Sociology, Psychology or a related discipline.
Past students have progressed on to careers in teaching, youth and community work, public administration, counselling and other graduate careers.
Additional Information
Full time students will be required to pay a registration fee of approximately £20.
An interview and basic skills screening is required.
