About this course
A GCSE in Art or Textiles is helpful but not essential. You should have an interest in art, and some experience of producing your own artwork. If you do not have a GCSE grade C in Art or Textiles you should bring a portfolio of art and design work to your interview.

Art and Design BTEC National Diploma
This course is ideal for students who want a career in art and design. You will experiment with a variety of techniques, materials and processes, learn new skills, build up a substantial portfolio of work, and gain an insight into the various specialisms that you could follow at a higher level.
You will have access to specialist facilities, including studio space, workshops, darkroom, digital imaging and the latest in IT.
What will I study?
You will follow a broad based Art and Design course exploring a range of areas such as drawing and painting, graphic design, photography, textiles and design crafts.
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to visit exhibitions, museums and galleries to explore historical and contemporary aspects of art and design. You will also learn how to present your work, and develop a varied portfolio.
You will take 5 core units:
- Visual Recording in Art & Design
- Contextual Influences in Art & Design
- Materials, Techniques & Processes in Art & Design
- Ideas & Concepts in Art & Design
- Visual Communication in Art & Design
You will also take 12 further specialist units covering areas such as textiles, photography, painting, sculpture, graphic design and design crafts. In the second year you will undertake a final project brief written by you in negotiation with teaching staff, and there will be an exhibition of your work at the end of the year.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the course by presentation of your sketchpads and portfolio work to the BTEC assessment criteria standards.
What can I do next?
The portfolio you produce over the course will enable you to show a wide range of relevant experience and skills at interview for employment or further study in art and design related areas. You will also receive individual help and support when making choices about applications.
