Course aims:
This very intensive and demanding one year course builds on the work and the units undertaken on the one year level 3 National Award course. The National Diploma provides you with the opportunity to study in greater depth a specialist pathway area of Art & Design that suits your strengths and interests, such as Fashion and Textiles, Graphics and Illustration or Three Dimensional Design.
In Term 1, you will begin to explore your chosen specialist pathway in greater depth through undertaking specialist assignments and workshops. In Terms 2 & 3 you will work alongside students enrolled on the Foundation Diploma within your chosen specialist pathway. The course culminates in a Final Major Project and exhibition in which you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have attained within your chosen specialist pathway area.
The qualification is the vocational equivalent of three A-levels at grade C and above and through building a comprehensive Art and Design portfolio will facilitate your progression into a wide range of higher education Art and Design courses, or enable you to apply for jobs within the Creative Industries.
In addition to the National Diploma qualification you will undertake two short NCFE qualifications (60 hours each) that will complement your National Diploma specialist pathway. Information about the options that you can choose from will be given at the start of the course.
If you are interested in a career in the creative industries, City College is the place to study art and design on the South Coast. Based at City Colleges Pelham Street campus in North Laine, the Colleges Visual Arts department has cultivated the type of vibrant, exciting atmosphere that you would expect from being at an Art College. There are rich and diverse opportunities across the art and design spectrum, covering fashion, textiles, graphics, illustration, games development, 3 D and mixed media - a diversity that is unmatched in local further education arts provision. Theres a big arts community at the College from Level 1 through to Foundation Degree level so its the kind of environment in which fashion textiles students are likely to rub shoulders with fine art sculpture students. This constant exchange of ideas is encouraged and supported by tutors.
The department has a wide range of full-time and sessional staff who are all practising artists and designers involved in Brightons buzzing art and design scene. Whether youre a school leaver or mature student, if you want to work in the creative industries but need guidance in finding your direction, there are staff here who will help you to focus and realise your potential.
Every year, the department stages spectacular fashion shows which not only involves collaboration amongst students from different art and design disciplines but also with students from the Colleges music and hair & beauty departments. Overseas study trips to locations such as Amsterdam have also proved inspirational to students.
Along with the sense of creative freedom that students enjoy, there is an academic underpinning to the development of skills. Curses are vocationally-focussed with pastoral care, guidance and support helping students who are making the transition from school to College. Parental consultation during courses is welcomed and valued.
