Religious Studies is taught in a rigorous, academic way. It challenges students to think clearly, follow lines of reasoning and it encourages the development of critical skills. It also enables students to understand and appreciate beliefs and practices that are different from their own.
AS: Year 1
Unit 1: The Philosophy of Religion Ancient Greek influences on philosophy of religion; Judaeo-Christian influences on philosophy of religion; Traditional arguments for the existence of God; Challenges to religious belief.
Unit 2: Buddhism Origins of Buddhism; Core concepts; Key teachings; attitudes and practices.
A2: Year 2
Unit 3: Philosophy of Religion Religious language; Experience and religion; Nature of God; Life and death; Miracle.
Unit 4: A2 Buddhism Key concepts; the importance of scriptures; Religious practice; Later Buddhist developments; Ethics.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Each module will be assessed by an exam of 1 hour 30 minutes for AS and A2.
What Could I Do Next?
Religious Studies provides excellent preparation for degrees in any humanities subject. It is an especially good A Level for those who want a career working in public service, business or in the community. University Admissions tutors are often impressed by this unusual and challenging A Level.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
No, although students will be invited to attend trips to religious institutions for educational purposes.
