Course Description
This is a combined honours degree, consisting of 70% English and 30% Theatre Practice modules. It is unique in offering a strong basis of skills in analysing literature and language, joined with practical skills related to the theatre.

In the English component of the programme, you will acquire knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary for analysing literary texts (including, but not limited to, drama) and features of language. You will also learn how cultural contexts (historical, social, aesthetic, and intellectual developments) influence the ways in which texts produce meanings.

You will study a wide variety of texts from the 16th century to the present, exploring their themes, as well as their formal features. Meanwhile, the Theatre Practice component will provide you with a hands-on approach to working with theatrical texts. In this component, â€-texts†will be approached as containing not only the verbal aspects of drama, but also the non-verbal elements, such as the use of space, voice, actors†bodies, music, and lighting.

While you will become familiar with leading modern theories of drama, the overall emphasis will be on practice, rather than theory: 'doing' theatre, rather than just talking about it!

Course Structure
At Level 4 you will study six core modules:
  • Readers and Texts
  • Representation and Variation in English
  • Studying Literature 1: Storytelling
  • Studying Literature 2: Literary Form and Meaning
  • Body and Voice 1
  • Theatre Practice 1

At Level 5 you will study four core modules:
  • Texts and Contexts
  • Early Modern Literature
  • Body and Voice 2
  • Theatre Practice 2

You will also choose two optional modules from the list below:
  • Language, Culture and Education
  • Realism and Modernism
  • Romanticism and Beyond

At Level 6 you will study two core modules
  • Modern Drama
  • Solo Performance

You will also choose modules which will provide you with a further 60 credits, from the following list:
  • Dissertation/Project
  • Englishes
  • Language and Society
  • Postmodern Literature
Course Assessment
You will be assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, class tests, projects, continual assessment, performances, working logs and notebooks.
