BHS NVQ L1 Horsecare Knowledge and RidingDuration
One Year full time

Attendance
You will be expected to be available to attend college for a minimum of 3 days per week.

Course Description
The course is designed for school leavers and adults who have some experience in the care of horses and ideally have some riding experience. It will provide you with the skills and a vocational qualification so that you can work within the equine industry. You will be required to take an initial assessment in your riding ability.

You will also be required to attend key skills sessions up to level 2 after an initial assessment.

You must commit to 100% attendance.

Course Structure
Mandatory Units
  • Assist with feeding and watering horses
  • Assist with grooming and washing
  • Assist with the cleaning of stables and the yard
  • Assist with putting on and taking off tack, and cleaning tack and clothing
  • Assist with handling horses
  • Maintaining health and safety and good working relationships


Optional Unit
Ride schooled horses under supervision

Course Assessment
This is a portfolio based assessment qualification. Assessments will be made on practical ability and knowledge and understanding of set criteria. The course is Internally Verified and Externally Verified by the British Horse Society. Completion of all mandatory units and the additional unit is required to receive the full qualification.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

A uniform is required for this course.

Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.
