About this course

5 GCSE's at Grade C or above which must include preferably a Grade A or B, but a minimum of Grade C in GCSE Biology (or 2 C's in Double Award Science). Grade C is also desirable in Mathematics and English Language.

Biology/Human Biology A Level (Level 3)
Course Content
This course studies a variety of areas in biology using the study of plants and animals and covers topics such as Ecology, Human Physiology, Microscopy, Genetics, Evolution, Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
Study units for the full six A level units include:
  • Molecules and Cells;
  • Exchange, Transport and Reproduction;
  • Energy and Environment;
  • Respiration and Coordination;
  • Genetics and Evolution;
  • Synoptic and Practical Assessment.

There is the option to either study Biology or Human Biology.
The course is equivalent to 40-120 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
The course is taught using a range of techniques in laboratories with experienced Biologists. All topics are assessed internally by using past paper questions for home work and tests.
Formal External Assessment consists of examinations for 3 units at AS and a further 2 taught units at A2 Level together with a synoptic paper. There is also a coursework element for both AS and A2 which consists of an investigation at AS and the option of either a further investigation or exam at A2 Level.

This course can lead to:
Higher Education (degrees) such as Medicine and associated Biomedical related areas, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Management, Physiotherapy, Biological Sciences, Marine Biology, Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Sports Science, Teaching.
