Course Description:
This programme provides a general introduction to the health and social care services. It prepares students for progression to a further programme of study and for employment in the care sector. Core Units: Unit 1 - Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors Unit 2 - Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors Option Units: Unit 3 - Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting Unit 4 - Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care Unit 5 - Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care Unit 6 - Human Lifespan Development Unit 7 - Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care Unit 8 - Health and Social Care Services Unit 9 - The Impact of Diet on Health Teaching and Learning styles: BTEC First Awards in Care adopt a student centred approach to study, whereby students learn to take charge of their own studying, to work both in groups and on their own and to develop a wide range of skills which will equip them for work in the caring professions. Work placement is an essential part of this programme and students will have the opportunity to work with different client groups.

Assessment and Progression:
Assessment takes the form of: Continuous assessment throughout the programme and the production of a Portfolio of Evidence. A Grade of PASS, MERIT, or DISTINCTION will be awarded for each unit achieved. Key Skills: all students will follow a programme of Communication, Information Technology and Application of Number throughout the programme. Assessment will be via a portfolio of evidence and external tests. Progression Achievement of BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care with units at Distinction level equips students for application to a range of more demanding programmes, which include Advanced Level, GNVQ, BTEC National Diploma and CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education. Also students could apply for a wide variety of jobs in health and social care establishments in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
