About this course

This course is aimed at learners aged 16+ who would like to gain employment in the uniformed public services sector. You will need 5 GCSEs grades A-C (including Maths and English).
Mature students will be considered on the basis of experience. There will be a selection interview.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
You will gain both the practical skills, fitness and academic standards required for a career in the public services. You will cover topics such as Government and Policies, Citizenship, Team Leadership, Public Services Fitness, Crime and its effects on society and Expeditions Skills.

WHAT DO I NEED?
WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
The course is run over two years and includes 1080 recommended guided learning hours plus opportunities to upgrade Maths and English and ICT in Functional Skills. You will need to attend classes for approximately 18 hours per week. In addition to this you will need to spend approximately 6-10 hours a week on coursework at home or in college. Your assignments will need to be completed by the set deadlines and you will need to attend regularly and punctually. There is also a strong fitness element to the course so commitment to physical training is a must.
The BTEC National Certificate in Uniformed Public Services course is made up of 12 units and the BTEC National Diploma in Uniformed Public Services is made up of 18 units.
The course is assessed through course work which will include verbal presentations, role plays, essays, written reports, physical tasks and fitness tests and group work. Functional Skills are assessed through tests and portfolios.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Higher Education, for example foundation degree or degree level qualifications. Employment in the public services.

WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
Either BTEC National Certificate in Uniformed Public Services or BTEC National Diploma in Uniformed Public Services. You will also complete a programme of Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT. These Functional Skills are an essential requirement for employment progression, higher education and other further education courses.

The College is committed to you studying for national qualifications in Maths, English and ICT within your vocational course. This will help you get the most out of your work, education and everyday life.

Course fees are payable on enrolment. Costs shown in brackets are for those on income-based benefits. Refunds are not normally available.

WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS ARE THERE?
Students are expected to provide their own sports wear and may need to add to the cost of expeditions. Costs will be kept to a minimum and they will be discussed during the course. There is no need to purchase any equipment prior to starting the course.
