Is the course for me?
There are two course pathways on the National Diploma in Performing Arts. We offer a Musical Theatre (route B) or Acting route (route A). This two year course is for students wanting to develop skills in acting, dance and voice. Students use this course as a stepping stone to University and further training schools such as London based academies. The course has an historically high percentage of students who progress onto Higher Education (95% in 2008/2009). Classes are vocationally and practically taught in a student focused and led approach. You will perform in a variety of shows, at least four times a year, gaining the underpinning theoretical knowledge and performance skills. An interview and audition is required.
What will I learn?
The course is aimed at people who are interested in developing a variety of skills related to the performing arts industry. The course is predominantly practical with some written assignments. The course involves a combination of practical and theory sessions. Performances throughout the course link to industry skills. We also enter three students from each pathway to participate in the World Uk Skills competiton in Musical Theatre and Acting. We are currently National winners and hold Gold and Silver medals in Musical theatre and a Bronze medal in Acting. We were previously Gold in Acting 2008. Acting Pathway: 1. Classical Theatre 2. Contemporary Theatre 3. Improvisation 4. Voice for the actor 5. Acting Auditions 6.Three end of term productions (per year) - professional scale 7. Touring theatre 8. Theatre history and business 9. Dance performance/movement coaching 10. Devising and Scriptwriting 11. Physical Theatre Musical Theatre Pathway: 1. Classical Theatre 2. Contemporary Theatre 3. Improvisation 4. Voice for the actor 5. Acting Auditions 6.Three end of term productions (per year) 7. Touring theatre 8. Theatre history and business 9. Dance performance/movement coaching 10. Devising and Scriptwriting 11. Dance technique incl. Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Modern. 12. Song for the Musical Theatre Actor.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous through portfolio, written assignments, workshops and practical performances.
What can I do after the course?
Previous students have gone on to Higher Education courses or prestigious acting schools like Italia Conti. You can progress to Degree level in specialised areas of dance, drama, singing and performance. For exceptional learners, drama schools would be an option.
Entry Requirement
You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English (if not achieved this can be completed within the course duration), or have successfully completed a Level 2 course in any subject graded at merit or above with Key skills to Level 2. You will also need to successfully complete an audition. We only want to work with driven and hard working individuals who take their art seriously. Long hours and additional rehearsals are expected when rehearsing for large scale productions.
