BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development

Length of Course: 2 years, full-time

Course Description: This course is designed for students to study the all round development and progress of children aged 0 - 16 years, and addresses the issues that affect children, their parents and carers. Successful completion of the BTEC National Diploma provides learners with Qualified Practitioner Status for the 0-8 age group.

A process of continuous assessment through written and practical assignments. All students are required to attend at least 80% of the programme. Students can be placed in a Welsh medium placement. 16 units are studied including:
  • Reflecting on and Developing Practice
  • Promoting Children's Development
  • Learning Activities and Play
  • Psychological Perspectives on Children's Behaviour
  • Safe-guarding Children
  • Research Methodology.


Entry requirements:
  • Minimum of 6 GCSE subject passes at grade C or above (to include English, preferably Mathematics and a Science), or equivalent.
  • PLUS two good references and suitability demonstrated at interview.


Progression/Career Opportunities: The opportunity to work as an Early Years Worker in a Nursery School or class within a Primary School; Day Nursery; Hospital; Workplace Crèche; Social Services; in a private family as a Nanny or Voluntary Childcare Organisations within the Community.

The course is equivalent to four A Levels (440 UCAS points), and therefore offers excellent progression to Higher Education courses including: Foundation Degree in Early Years Care & Education; BA (Hons) Degree in Education (Qualified Teacher Status), BA (Hons) Degree in Early Childhood Studies, Nursing; Social Work; Psychology or Health Studies.
