Course Description
The course will provide you with the coaching, administrative, fitness and sporting knowledge required to be successful within this part of the industry. The BTEC National Diploma in Sport has two different pathways to reflect the diverse market which makes up the sports industry. These are the National Diploma in Sport, Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness Pathway and the National Diploma in Sport, Outdoor Adventure Pathway. These qualifications are vocationally based with a combination of practical activities underpinned with theoretical study, giving you a good mix of learning environments and real life learning experiences. On both pathways you will benefit from visits to industry, guest speakers, residentials and work experience at e.g. fitness gym, school, sports development department or residential outdoor centre. You will be given the opportunity and encouraged to gain practical sports coaching and leadership awards. You will be required to purchase a Craven College polo shirt for use when out visiting and coaching and to contribute to costs of trips and residentials.
Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness Pathway
This course reflects the growth in higher education and job opportunities now emerging in sports development, coaching and fitness industries. This will continue to increase due to government programmes putting £2bn into sports development at grass roots level between 2001 and 2011, the successful London Olympic bid, the emerging health agenda across the nation and the continued development of the fitness industry.
Outdoor Adventure Pathway
The BTEC National in Sport, Outdoor Adventure Pathway will prepare you for a career in this fast expanding specialist area of the sports industry. Craven College has established an enviable reputation in this particular area with an equipment base, day centre, a residential base and a strong safety record. The foundation for the course is based on its links with employers in the sector and its belief that, to work in the outdoor sector, you should have strong personal outdoor skills and experience. As a college we commit much of the programme to practical skills and learning of outdoor activities. The college also has validation from governing bodies to run specialist outdoor qualifications in climbing, hill walking, canoeing and kayaking. There will be a period of work experience allowing you to obtain valuable experience of working with others in the outdoors. Residentials are also an integral part of the programme allowing extension studies and wider outdoor skills to be learned. All specialist outdoor equipment will be provided, a lthough if the learner is to launch a career in the outdoors then some personal equipment will be necessary.
