Business, Retail & Administration Introductory Diploma
These qualifications have been designed to encourage the development of personal skills and qualities needed for work in business, retail and administration. BTEC Introductory courses are intended as practical "hands on" programmes that provide the chance to explore the opportunities offered in a chosen vocational sector, i.e. business, retail and administration. You may be able to study for one or more BTEC Introductory qualification at the same time in order to get a flavour of several vocational sectors.

Course Content:
The Introductory Certificate comprises four units, while the Introductory Diploma goes into more depth with eight units. Both courses include core units, Personal Skills units and optional units. The subjects covered are outlined below. Core Units: BTEC Introductory Diploma students take all of the following three units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will take two (as indicated).

  • Starting work in business, retail and administration
  • Working in business, retail and administration (Diploma only)
  • Introducing customer service
  • Personal skills units: BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose two of the following units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will choose one.

    • Personal effectiveness
    • Social responsibility at work
    • Financial management



    Optional Units:
    These units enable you to study particular areas in more depth. BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose three of the following units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will choose one.

    • Ensuring personal health and safety at work
    • Communicating effectively at work
    • Introduction to retail
    • Introduction to administration
    • Work experience (Diploma only)

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants will normally hold one of the following:

    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Assessment:
    Projects and assignments will be based on realistic workplace activities. The 'Starting work in business, retail and administration' and 'Working in business, retail and administration' units are assessed using an externally set Project Assessment.

    Progression Routes:
    Successful students may be considered for progression to a Level 2 qualification, for example the BTEC First Diploma in Business. Alternatively, you may choose to take another qualification at Level 1 in an alternative subject.

    Career Options:
    These qualifications can prepare you for a variety of junior roles in the business, administration and retail sectors.
