What will I be studying?
This is the equivalent to 3 A levels. You will follow a course in which theory and practice are closely linked. Work placements are an integral part of the course and are arranged in a variety of childcare settings. The theoretical part of the course covers aspects of child development from birth to eight years of age. Modules studied will include: An Introduction to Working with Children; Development from Conception to 16 years; Supporting Children; Keeping Children safe; The Principles Underpinning the Role of the Practitioner; Promoting a Healthy Environment for Children; Play, Learning and Education; Caring for Children; Professional Skills; Research Project; Special Educational Needs; Developing Children's Communictaion, Language and Literacy Skills; Welsh for Childcare. You will also study Key Skills, Manual Handling, First Aid, Food Hygiene and Health and Safety. There is a period of work placement equivalent to 750 hours which is a mandatory element of the course.

You will be given the opportunity to study some of the units on this course bilingually.

What can I do when I have successfully completed the programme?
You may enter employment after the course as a Classroom Assistant in a School, Nursery Nurse in the Health Service, Care Worker in a Residential Special School, Childminder, Nanny or Play Scheme Worker. Since the Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels, if successful, you may have the opportunity to progress to Higher Education to pursue a career in Teaching, Nursing or Social Work.

Entry requirements
You will need either 5GCSEs at Grade C or above (preferably including English/Welsh and Mathematics) or a distinction grade BTEC First Diploma, CACHE CCE level 2 at distinction or equivalent. Students may be accepted without formal qualifications subject to a satisfactory interview and relevant experience. You must be at least sixteen years old at the date of registration for the award. All applicants are interviewed.
