Course Content
Level 1
Practical and theory to include: - hand tools, portable power tools, timber and timber based products, drawing, marking out, cutting joints, simple unit assembly and Health and Safety, leading to the construction of a small cabinet with drawer and veneered door. An online test on Health and Safety is also required, along with a portfolio of the coursework as evidence.

Level 2
Practical and theory to include working effectively within a commercial environment, designing and making wooden components and furniture assemblies, laminating and bending. Cutting and assembling veneers to produce decorative designs. A final set piece is the assessed assignment, usually comprising a small table with chessboard top and traditional drawer. An online test on Health and Safety and risk assessment is also required, along with a portfolio of the coursework.

Level 3
Practical and theory to include evaluating and developing skills and expertise, decorative veneers, covering marquetry and parquetry. Research, design and drawing of high specification furniture and construction of same. Oils, polishes and other finishes. A set piece is produced to a high standard, which is assessed and marked, along with a portfolio which covers the years work. A Level 3 student won 1st prize in the furniture section at the South of England show in 2008.

Assessment/Exams
Level 1 - Completion of a portfolio and classroom observations of practical activities, plus an online test on Health and Safety.

Level 2 - Completion of a portfolio and classroom observations of practical activities, a set test piece, plus an online test on Health and Safety and risk assessment.

Level 3 - Completion of a portfolio, classroom observations of practical activities and a set test piece. (Plus an online test on Health and Safety and risk assessment for those students who did not do Level 2).

Progression/Career Path
With Levels 1, 2 and 3 completed to a satisfactory standard, the student should be in a position to join a furniture making business with enough skills to become a useful member of the works team. It would also be reasonable to assume that they would be sufficiently skilled to design and produce bespoke furniture within their own workshop.

No formal requirements. However, a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy, an ability to benefit from a programme at this level and an appropriate reference will be required.
