Course Content
The course covers aspects of theoretical and practical chemistry and provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience in assembling apparatus, purification procedures; analysis; preparation of chemicals; planning and review of experiments.
Study units include:
- Atomic Structure;

- Chemical Equilibrium;
- Rates of Reaction;
- Organic Chemistry;
- Energy Changes During Reactions;
- Radioactivity;
- Inorganic Chemistry.
This course is equivalent to 40-120 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
Year 1: Module1 exam sat in January, Module3a sat in May and Module2 sat in June.
Year 2: Module4 exam sat in January, Module5 and 6a sat in June.
Coursework: Modules 3 and 6 are partially assessed by two practical sessions involving analysing, measuring and preparing chemicals under exam conditions.
Modules1 and 2 contribute 35% of the AS mark each & 17.5 % of the A-level mark. Module3 contributes 30 % of AS & 15 % of the A-level. Modules4 and 5 contribute 15% of the A-level. Module6 contributes 20 % of the A-level.
Progression
The qualification allows for a number of progression routes:
Higher Education: the award is a sound basis for progression to a range of HE (degree) courses, e.g. biochemical science, chemistry, food technology, human physiology, materials science, medical physics, nursing, sports science. . Chemistry is an essential A level subject for all the medical courses in Higher Education.
Employment in various science sectors: chemical industry, healthcare, leisure and associated industries, medical and laboratory based science, food and catering industries.
Further Education qualifications: the award enables students to progress to other science related qualifications such as GCE and VRQ.
