To provide knowledge and practical training for those wishing to gain an initial qualification in childcare learning and education. Learners who successfully pass all the requirements of the course will gain assistant practitioner status in a supervised capacity within an early years environment.

BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care Learning & Development (EDEXCEL)

Progression Routes
Students can apply to progress to a Level 3 course i.e: BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care Learning & Development, or NVQ3 in Children's Care Learning & Development, or CACHE Level 3 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education, or depending on their overall achievement in placements, written work, exam achievement at distinction level and suitable childcare and academic references, employment within the childcare sector in a supervised capacity.

Modules
Core Units: Understanding Children's Development; Keeping Children Safe; Communication with Children and Adults; Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Childcare; Professional Development, Roles and Responsibilities in Childcare. Specialist Units: Supporting Children's Play and Learning. You will also take Key Skills in IT, Application of Number and Communication at a level appropriate for your course, and wider key skills. You are likely to also undertake Health and Safety, Basic Food Hygiene, Manual Handling and First Aid Training.

Entry Requirements
At least 4 GCSE passes at Grade D in written subjects preferably with a Grade D English; equally important is a positive attitude towards working with children. Applicants who have achieved the Cache Foundation Award in Childcare at Distinction level will be considered if in possession of GCSE criteria. All childcare students will have to have a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and suitable references related to childcare experience, together with a suitable academic reference. There will be a charge for the CRB which is non-refundable. Students will also have to have a satisfactory health check and undertake a written task at interview.
