The Course
Entry Level 3 is an ideal starting point for learners straight from school who have no practical experience of working on cars but are interested in working in the auto industry.

Course Content
Learners will study and practise work for the following units:
  • Unit 11 Engine lubrication systems
  • Unit 12 Engine cooling systems
  • Unit 13 Fuel and exhaust systems
  • Unit 14 Spark ignition systems
  • Unit 15 Electrical systems
  • Unit 16 Braking systems
  • Unit 17 Transmission systems
  • Unit 18 Steering and suspension systems
  • Unit 19 Wheel and tyre systems
  • Unit 21 Vehicle operating principles
The vehicle of today has many complex systems and the learner must be familiar with the basic function and operation of the many and various systems that enable the vehicle systems to integrate with each other and ensure systems operate to the manufacturers specification.
These units will give the learner the knowledge and skills base to service and maintain the vehicle systems to operational parameters. The course is practical based and the theory is covered in the workshop doing practical tasks. The practical approach will develop the hand skills of the learner as well as developing the range of skills required for todays modern vehicle. It is anticipated that the learner will undertake some research to gain appreciation of the vehicle systems and operation in their own time. Learners will also study the units: Application of Numbers, Communications and IT for the Key Skills qualification or participate in Basic Skills.

Progression/Career Path
After satisfactory completion of Entry Level 3, learners could go on to employment and continue their qualification through the day release courses.
Learners could also continue their qualification through the full time route by going on to Level 1 or 2 for another year for each Level and then to Level 3. Satisfactory completion of the three Levels could entitle the learner to progress to Higher Education.

Assessment/Exams
During the practical sessions learners will practise the assessments a number of times and their progress will be monitored and feedback given. When the learner is proficient they will undertake the assessments which must be completed to industry standards. There are also a few questions that have to be answered on each task, these are normally written but knowledge can also be orally tested. There are no exams for the Certificate in Automotive Vehicle Maintenance.
The completed practical worksheets will be placed in a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed internally and externally.
On successful completion of practical assessments and portfolio, the learner will be awarded a Certificate in Automotive Vehicle Maintenance.
