Computing sets out to provide a wide and in-depth study of the principles, properties, uses and limitations of computers. This course will be of use not only to those students who wish to enter careers in computing but also to students who at some stage may use computer applications in their work.

About this course

Computing can be taken at AS Level without prior study of the subject. Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C including Maths and English. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Career Prospects and Progression

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications. Studying computing helps to develop a good general scientific training as well as the ability to think logically, quantitatively and creatively. You will learn the importance of being able to communicate your ideas. Many jobs directly related to computing would require further study but would include, software engineer, programmer, systems analyst, systems development engineer or computer technician.

Method of Assessment

AS Level One written paper of length 3 hours contributing 32.5% towards the AS qualification. A practical internal project, 17.5% towards the AS qualification. This is where candidates analyse, design, implement, test and evaluate a solution to a given problem requiring the production of original code (programming). A2 Level One written paper of length 3 hours - 32.5% of the A2 qualification. A substantial programming project of the candidates choice. Again, this project requires the production of original code - 17.5% of the A2 qualification.
