Course aims:
Are you interested in being part of the exciting and growing Electrical industry? The UK construction industry is a major employer, consisting of small and large companies and many self-employed people. The industry is constantly developing to meet the challenges of creating a built environment which meets the needs of the population and growing environmental pressures.
This course provides a good basic introduction to the world of Electrical Installation and will prepare you for an Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation. The course will introduce you to all the different aspects of working as an electrician
  • Different types of cables
  • Different containment systems (trunking, tray, conduit etc)
  • Different working environments (domestic, commercial, industrial)
  • Inspection and Testing
  • Circuit design
  • Electrical theory
  • Health and Safety


Course content:
On this course you will study:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • Forming and assembling electrical cable enclosure and support systems
  • Producing electrical or electronic engineering drawings using a CAD system (TBC)


Facilities for students:
This course is based at the Main Campus for City College in the heart of Brighton. The Electrical Section is in a purpose-built unit, with modern, well-equipped workshop facilities and classrooms with computers. There is an excellent cafeteria service in the Tower Block and central Brighton with many cafes etc is on our doorstep.

Tutors:
Small committed and experienced team of lecturers and assessors. All our staff are qualified and experienced electricians. We have a mixture of fulltime and part-time staff.

Assessment: There are two multiple choice exams for the CG2330-01 L2 units and continuous practical assessment and written question assessment for the PEO NVQ2

Awarding Body: EAL

Entry Requirements:
You will normally need to have a minimum of GCSE maths and English at grade D or above or Key Skills Application of Number and Communications at Level 1 or above.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Progression and links:
An apprenticeship to train to be an electrician or enrolment on 2330-01 Level 2 Tech cert in Electrotechnical Technology (the first step towards qualifying as an electrician).
This course is the first step to becoming an electrician.

Work experience opportunities:
N/A but any student who is working in the electrical industry or who can organise their own work experience will benefit from it.
