This 1-year course consists of four core units and two specialist units, the qualification is the equivalent of four GCSEs grades A*- C and is normally taken as a full-time course. It is a practical course supported by a study of the music industry. It provides a good basis to progress to more advanced work-related qualifications.

About this course
You must be at least 16 years of age on starting the course. You will normally need to have at least one of the following: A BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject; a standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades D-E; related work experience or other related level 1 or 2 qualifications. You will be invited to attend an interview. In preparation for the interview you will be asked to practice an audition piece. You will be asked to perform the piece on your chosen instrument in an informal setting. Tutors will be looking for enthusiasm and commitment to rehearsing the piece rather than purely focusing on technical competence.

What will I study?
The course requires you to plan and create a musical product. You will explore various professions within music, such as A&R, management, session musicians, producing and song writing. The course covers rehearsing, planning and performing as part of a band. You will have the opportunity to work in a state of the art recording studio, using industry standard equipment. You will also develop your understanding of the theory of music and explore different styles of music. You will work with computer systems such as Reason, WAVE Lab and Pro tools.
How will I be assessed?
All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of the qualification an overall grade of pass, merit, or distinction is awarded.
