Suitable applicants will have 3 GCSEs grade C or above, including either Maths, English, ICT or a Science, an interest / passion for hairdressing. Must be of smart appearance and have good interpersonal skills, these will be assessed during interview. Due to the intensity of the course (over one year) students should already have achieved the diploma in women 's hairdressing at level 2, proving they are industry work ready, before entry on to this course, which certificates competency of skills and knowledge in the workplace.

Hairdressing Level 2 NVQ
This course is designed for learners wishing to gain competency in the foundation skills and knowledge for ladies hairdressing, or for those wishing to improve competence at existing foundation level skills/knowledge.

Course Content:
A minimum of nine units must be completed to gain the full award.

  • G1 - Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety (mandatory)
  • G5 - Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • G7 - Advise and consult with clients
  • H9 - Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • H6 - Cut hair using basic techniques
  • H10 - Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques
  • H13 - Change hair colour using basic techniques
  • Two optional units:

    • H12 - Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
    • Or
    • H15 - Perm, relax and neutralise hair
    • H11 - Style hair using basic plaiting techniques and added hair
    • G4 - Fulfil salon reception duties
    • G6 - Promote additional products or services to clients
    • G8 - Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
    • H18 - Provide scalp massage services

    * Please note the optional unit completed will be G4 and H12.

    Vocational Relevance:
    This qualification gives learners an insight into the hairdressing industry giving them opportunity to gain foundation skills and knowledge in this vocational area. The knowledge gained and skills acquired will prepare candidates for the level 3 diploma in hairdressing, NVQ level 2 in barbering or NVQ level 3 hairdressing, however, students will be required to apply and be re-interviewed for these courses if they wish to progress.

    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    Work experience is strongly recommended whilst on this course. Please note however, there may be instances where places on the course will be offered with the proviso that students have a work placement. These will be instances where it is thought, for a variety or reasons, that the candidate will need this experience run along side their course in order to benefit from full achievement of the qualification. Reasons will always be explained to the candidate on interview.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

      Assessment:
      Assessment is through observation, written questions and assignments, simulation and case studies.

      Progression Routes:
      Alternatively, successful students may progress, subject to interview, to the Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing (City & Guilds 6902-04) or the Level 2 Diploma in Barbering (City & Guilds 6902-02) on a full-time or part-time basis.

      Career Options:
      Students successfully completing this qualification could progress to employment as a junior stylist.
