Health & Social Care First Diploma
This course will give you the skills and knowledge to work in the health, social care and Early Years field.

Course Content:
The course is made up of six units, each focusing on a particular subject relating to the construction field. All students take two core units that provide a foundation of knowledge on which to build. In addition to these, students take four specialist units that offer the opportunity to study particular areas of the health and social care field in greater depth. Core Units: The following units are compulsory for all students:

  • Communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors
  • Individual needs within the health and social care sectors
  • Specialist Units: Students choose four units from the following list:

    • Vocational experience in a health and social care setting
    • Cultural diversity in health and social care
    • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
    • Human lifespan development
    • Creative and therapeutic activities in health and social care
    • Health and social care services
    • The impact of diet on health

    Students will also have the opportunity to study or re-take GCSEs, first aid, foundation food hygiene and key skills in communication, IT and application of number

    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    Work experience one day per week is an important part of the course.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants should have one of the following:

    • At least four GCSEs including two at grade C or above
    • BTEC Introductory Diploma or equivalent Level 2 qualification in a related subject at Distinction

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

      Assessment:
      Two out of the six units are assessed through external examinations, the remaining four by portfolio. GCSE assessment varies but may include end of year examinations.

      Progression Routes:
      Students can progress onto Level 3 courses at the College, for example the CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education, Advanced Diploma is Society, Health and Development and BTEC National Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed).

      Career Options:
      Successful students may progress to employment in settings such as care homes, hospitals and primary care trusts, nursing homes and health centres. With further study, careers in nursing, social work and residential care management may be possible.
