About this course

A GCSE qualification in History is useful but not essential. However, if you have taken GCSE History you will need at least a grade C.

History AS/A2
This course will appeal to students who enjoy investigation and debate. You will be encouraged to question, imagine and argue and learn to challenge written and visual evidence to reach your own conclusions. You will study contrasting regimes such as Nazi Germany and the democracies of Britain and the USA.

What will I study?
Throughout the course you will develop your skill of assessing evidence, analysis and discussion and learn how to use evidence to support your own conclusions. You will look at why some countries give their people freedom and become democracies, whilst others restrict freedom and become dictatorships.

AS: In the first year you will study the Anti-Semitism, Hitler and the Holocaust. You will also study America 1890-1945 including the Great Depression and Prohibition.

A2: In the second year you will study the emergence of Britain as a democracy between 1865-1914. This will also involve looking at Britain's imperial and foreign policy during this period. Your personal study will allow you to showcase your analytical skills in an extended piece of coursework. It will be based on a 100 year period such as the causes of World Wars I and II.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 examinations at the end of the first year.

A2: 1 examination at the end of year two, plus an individual coursework study based on the study of a 100 year period.

History is an excellent subject for the study of a wide range of University courses, including Law, Economics, Business Studies, Philosophy, English, Archaeology, Politics and Social Sciences. If you choose to specialise in History there are a wide range of courses available, leading to employment in all sorts of fields, including law, journalism , business, teaching and the museum and heritage sector.
