Course Content
Modules are in:
- Developing skills for daily living - shopping, cooking, household tasks, laundry
- Developing personal care and presentation skills - personal cleanliness, care of hair, teeth, nails, use of public facilities
- Using community facilities - using health services, using local facilities (such as post office and bank) travelling using public transport
- Practical project work - through fund raising events or various option classes including IT and media, paint effects, practical home skills, sport
- Developing creative skills - through either a drama or art option
Numeracy and literacy skills are practised and developed throughout the course in practical everyday situations.
Residentials are also an integral part of the course, giving learners the chance to practise their independence skills through self catering on holiday.
Assessment/Exams
Throughout the course there will be continuous assessment, portfolio building and short tasks.
Progression/Career Path
This can lead to a further year of study on the Towards Employment (FFVCEY) course, which is for learners who have developed their independence and feel ready to go on work placement. It involves going on work experience two days a week and developing skills for work through running a college-based business and community projects.
Students can also move on to Adult Basic Skills courses, part time leisure courses, voluntary work, supported employment schemes or adult training centre placements.
These next steps are discussed and agreed through annual reviews.
