The Course
This course is designed to prepare people for work in the painting and decorating trade and is a combination of practical and theory sessions enabling you to gain good practical skills with underpinning job knowledge.
You will work towards achieving six units of practical competence through the year. The knowledge you gain of building industry practice will be tested in City and Guilds tests leading to the joint award of a Construction Awards Alliance Diploma by Construction Skills and City and Guilds. In addition, all full time courses include the mandatory Key Skills.

Course Content
This qualification is a Technical Certificate which can be transferred into an NVQ qualification once in employment or into an Apprenticeship framework.
The course assesses six painting and decorating units:

• Handle and store resources
• Contribute to work relationships
• Contribute to providing working platforms
• Clear and protect the work area
• Prepare surfaces for decorating
• Apply decorative materials
• Health and Safety
• Key Skills
• An external Health and Safety test is a compulsory part of the qualification and is required for the award of the Technical Certificate.

Assessment/Exams
Assessment is based on assignments covering both practical and theory aspects of the curriculum.

Progression/Career Path
The Diploma prepares students for work in their particular occupation. This course provides knowledge of all aspects of painting and decorating and prepares students to enter employment or to progress on to the Level 2 Diploma Painting and Decorating or to an Apprenticeship.

Qualifications Required
No formal requirements. However, a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy, an ability to benefit from a programme at this level and an appropriate reference will be required.
