Further and wider reading is essential and students should be prepared to read extensively throughout the course. You should have a minimum of GCSE grade B in English or English Literature.

Course Details
A level English focuses on language, its use and effects in both literary and non-literary texts. It provides the opportunity to study a wide variety of written and spoken texts, and consider the way in which language works. There are four sets of literary texts to be studied alongside the non-literary texts and unseen papers. AS 2 year programme: In the first year you will follow the AS course which has 3 papers, two examinations and a coursework element. The grade which results from these papers can be 'banked' or not, and the student can progress to the second stage. One year programme: Both AS and A2 modules can be taken in one year within the part-time programme. You will study Edexcel London 8179 and 9179 syllabuses and the examinations are as follows: Unit 1 - The spoken word (closed text). Unprepared commentary Much ado about nothing - Shakespeare Unit 2 - Desk study Textual material for writing tasks Unit 3A - Shorter fiction study (coursework) Dubliners - James Joyce
