No formal entry requirements, however you would be expected to have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and the ambition to obtain further education, training and employment. Successful completion on each life skills level will allow you to progress onto the next level, providing that basic skills at an appropriate level are also completed successfully.

Course Summary:
The Entry Level Life Skills Certificates at Nescot College are designed to provide you with the skills to live on your own or in supported living and to give you the opportunity to develop work based skills. When you have succeeded on this course you will be able to cook, clean, shop, travel and budget for yourself.

Course Details:

Full-time - Life Skills at Entry level 1, 2 and 3
You will learn how to care for themselves in preparation for moving on to supported living. You will learn to cook, clean, shop, travel and budget for themselves. You will also learn about horticulture, basic skills literacy with IT and numeracy, textiles, supported work experience, and enterprise skills. The course will be run over four days per week and you will be expected to be present and on time for all lessons.

Part time - Life Skills(accredited) courses
These courses will include aspects of the fulltime course but will be run over six hours per week in two time slots. You will learn how to care for themselves in preparation for moving on to supported living and will learn to cook, clean, shop, travel and budget for themselves.

Career Progression:
At the end of the course you can progress to the next entry level, and if successful at Entry level 3 in basic skills and life skills you can progress to NVQ 1 or foundation courses in a vocational area.

Other Information:
Additional support is provided in every class.

Group sizes are no more than eight in number.

There are some practical aspects to the course so expect to get wet, cold and dirty on occasions. You will have to buy your own steel toe capped boots and overalls to wear when doing horticultural work. Protective equipment to comply with health and safety regulations will be supplied by the college.

Fees:
If you are aged 16-18 there are no fees to pay.

If you are aged 19 or over on 31st August 2008 you will pay 25 affiliation fee and the cost of materials used eg. cookery costs. You will be exempt from the tuition fees if you are in receipt of a means tested benefit such as:-
  • Income support
  • Council tax benefit
  • Housing benefit
  • Jobseeker's allowance
  • Working tax credit (if your income does not exceed 15,050 per year)

If you do not receive a means tested benefit the tuition fees are:-
  • Short courses - 223
  • Part time course - 535
  • Full time course - 1,203
