Qualification gained: BTEC First Diploma in Media
Course Content: There are six units in the First Diploma, four of which are practical and two more theoretical. For theory, students have to look at understanding how the media works as well as how to use research in media production. The four practical units are Skills Development, Video Production, Audio Production and Photography Production.
Work Experience: There is no formal work experience arranged on this course but students are encouraged to look for work opportunities on their own, which the College will support.
Course Assessment: This is a practical course with assessment throughout the year. You will produce a portfolio of work which is assessed against the grading criteria for the six units. Each of the criteria will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. At the end of the course all of the unit grades count towards overal achievement for the qualification.
Progression: Students successfully completing the First Diploma can apply for the Level 3 National Certificate course in Media, or other level 3 courses in Art, Performing Arts or other subjects.
Homework: There will be a limited amount of work that needs to be done outside of class, perhaps 2-3 hours per week on occasions.
Additional Costs: There are no additional costs involved in the course, apart from normal pens and paper. Students may be advised to buy a textbook or go on trips or visits but these are not mandatory.
