Course Content
Students will carry out both practical and theoretical studies of all equipment found in modern recording studios. This includes lots of hands on experience of using mixing desks, multi-track recorders and effect units. Students also get the opportunity to study and use different microphone types for a variety of recording applications.
Students will take an in-depth look at the use of computers (PCs and Apple Macs) for a large variety of audio applications and will study MIDI, audio editing and synthesis. The course will include lots of practical work in using industry standard audio software, including the use of Cubase SX, Logic Pro, Kontact, Ableton, Pro-tools, Ozone, SynthEdit and Sound Forge. The use of computer software and samplers will be used in the study of dance music, production and live performance.
A practical study using audio in conjunction with other media, including film and computer games will also be included on this course.
The programme also looks at the theory behind music and the music industry. This will include chord structuring, basic keyboard skills as well as preparation for freelance careers with the study of contracts, management etc. The course also gives students an opportunity to help with the running of a real record label.
Assessment/Exams
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is then awarded when all units are completed over the two years (Pass, Merit, Distinction).
