Full Time NVQ in Horse Care
Course Description:
The course is designed for people who want to train for a career with horses or a related subject, who have had only limited experience with horses.
The course is a level 1 equestrian qualification providing a foundation for employment in the horse industry, learning basic equestrian skills. It will give you a good foundation for progression onto the level 2 programmes.
The course will introduce you to the care of horses, and you will also develop your horse riding skills. You will learn about feeding the horse, its care in the stable and at grass, how to put on tack and horse clothing and their care, horse handling and safe working practices.
You will learn in a group of up to 10 students with demonstrations and lectures. To become good at what you do, practice is essential therefore, you will participate in daily yard sessions where you will be working on the yards caring for the horses, mucking out, tidying the yard, feeding etc. This work will be supervised by college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work skills.
Full time students will usually study the Certificate in Land-Based Studies and the NVQ in Horse Care Level 1 during their years programme, giving timetabled hours of 21.5 hours per week, plus supervised daily work skills practice.

Assessment and Progression:
Your practical work will be assessed regularly throughout the course and the results recorded in a portfolio. You will also complete some written questions. You will always know how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve your work from the feedback from your tutors.
Students usually progress on to a Level 2 equestrian qualification such as the National Certificate, but may also progress to employment in the horse industry.
Duration:
Full-time students (21.5 hours per week/3days per week) will complete within 21 weeks (January - June).
Part-time students (12.5 hours per week/2 days per week) will complete within one academic year.
