Applicants should have completed: BTEC National Diploma, AVCE, or Advanced GNVQ in Photography or a related subject (ideally at merit or distinction profile), or a similar level 3 qualification such as an Access to HE programme or one A-level pass (or two AS-level passes) in relevant subjects . This should be supported by four GCSEs at grade C or above, ideally including Maths and English. Mature applicants (those over 21 years of age at the start of the course) without the formal requirements are welcomed and will be considered individually on the basis of a portfolio of work .

Photography Higher National Diploma
This well-established programme is offered in partnership with the University of Kent. It has been designed to extend the interaction of the theoretical, technical and creative aspects of photography and prepare students for employment within a field that is subject to rapid and continuous technological change. Students are provided with the firm foundation of skills, techniques and understanding needed for successful employment in professional photography and the photographic industries. In order to ensure this, the course has been developed and planned in consultation with professional photographers and those involved in the photographic industries. Technical and practical units are delivered by staff with photographic industry experience and by current practitioners. College attendance is in the afternoon and evening, a feature designed to enable students to maintain a sustainable level of part-time employment and facilitate daytime practical photography opportunities.

Course Content:
The programme features the following subjects:

  • Concepts in photography
  • Visual design Contextual studies
  • Photographic techniques, processes and materials
  • Small business management
  • Digital imaging (Levels 1
  • & 2)

  • Professional photographic practice
  • Critical studies
  • Specialist project Interactive multimedia Fundamentals of marketing
  • The course has been structured to enable students to learn the necessary skills to work as a professional image-maker within a wide range of photographic fields. Students will develop an understanding of the latest technologies and equipment available to photographers and will consider the practical creative and social issues relating to their applications.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time, consisting of attendance over three days per week in the afternoon and evening.

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.
