Course programme

Physics
Qualification: AS/A2 LEVEL

Programme Area: A Levels

Description:
Study is intended to stimulate you to develop analytical, synoptic, experimental and investigatory skills generating an awareness of the social, technological, environmental and economic impact of physics in present day society. The course is divided into six units: PH1 waves, light and basics, PH2 quanta and electricity, PH3 experimental physics, PH4 oscillations and energy, PH5 fields, forces and nuclei, PH6 synoptic and investigative physics. Although many of the topics within each module will have been introduced at GCSE level they will be revised thoroughly before being extended to full A level standard. Experimental work. Practical work is an essential component of the course and is used to illustrate and develop ideas met in theory. Unit PH3 will be assessed with an externally set practical test which will count as 30% of the AS award at the end of the first year. Unit PH6 includes a practical investigatory task and has weighting of 7.5% of the full A level.

Progression:
A level physics is accepted as an entry qualification to a wide range of university degree courses from accounting to veterinary science as well as to the more obviously physics based courses. These include acoustics, astronomy, engineering (civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical, production etc), and ophthalmic optics. It also prepares students to gain employment in a wide variety of fields.
