AS Physics

Is this course right for me?

This course covers fundamental concepts in classical physics (Forces, Energy and Motion) and provides an introduction to Electomagnetic Radiation and Quantum Physics. It is a pre-requisite for the A-Level (A2) Physics course

What will I be learning?

As well as studying the fundamental principles behind physics, you will look at how physics theory can be applied in a wide variety of situations. You will tackle the big questions like What is Energy and How big is the universe and analyse everyday phenomena that are often taken for granted (Why is the sky blue? Why do things fall?).

You will learn to handle abstract concepts and develop powerful problem solving skills. You will gain experience planning and carrying out practical work; relating observation to theory.

Topics we will cover:

Mechanics:
  • Motion
  • Forces in Action
  • Work and Energy

Electronics, Waves and Photons:
  • Electronic current
  • Resistance
  • DC Circuits
  • Waves
  • Quantum Physics

How will I learn?

The course contains a mixture of lectures, practical work and computer research. You will also be required to participate fully in class discussions and practical experiments. You will be expected to put in a lot of work outside of the classroom and complete regular homework tasks. Use will be made of the online resources and the Virtual Learning Environment.

What else might I want to know?

AS Physics covers a large and detailed body of knowledge and assessment is more rigorous that for GCSE. Answering exam questions requires you to express yourself clearly and previsely using correct scientific terminology. You should also be comfortable handling mathematical equations.

You are advised to take AS Mathematics with this subject.

What can I do afterwards?

Progression to the second year of the course (A2) will be dependent on your attitude and attendance throughout the AS year and also on you acquiring a grade D at AS level. This should be considered if you intend to progress to University.
