Popular Music Performance Foundation Degree
Aimed at students who want a career in the music industry, or in music teaching. The focus of the course is on performance, and covers a range of topics including musical styles, instrumental techniques, working in a band or as a solo artist/ songwriter, instrumental teaching techniques, music technology within live performance, the history of popular music and music business. Students will have continuous experience of performing and recording in our well-equipped studios throughout the two years, and will be given opportunities to perform in various venues. Students will leave the course with the necessary skills to begin teaching music, or enter the music industry.

Course Content:
The Course includes the following units:

  • First Study Instrument
  • Second Study Instrument
  • Covers Band Project (including various musical styles
  • : Electronica, Reggae/Dub, Progressive Rock, Southern Soul, Blues, Singer/ Songwriters

  • Contextual Studies (see above genres)
  • Theme Band Project
  • Original Band Project
  • Session Musicianship
  • Singer
  • / Songwriter Project

  • Music Technology In Performance (including Sequencing, Sampling and Sound Creation)
  • General Musicianship

    Vocational Relevance:
    This course provides the opportunity to develop the skills that are required by the music industry

    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    All students are actively encouraged to seek regular work experience over the two years to enhance and consolidate the work done in college.

    UCAS points:
    Credit points year 1: 120 Credit points year 2: 120

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available. Some evening/weekend attendance will be required.

    Assessment:
    Assessed by assignment on a continuous basis throughout the course.

    Progression Routes:
    Upon successful completion students may be able to top Foundation Degree up to a BA Hons.

    Career Options:
    The course is intended to provide students with the skills necessary to enter the music industry, particularly in performance and teaching.
