Religious Studies AS/A2
Religion is a powerful force in our world, influencing the way people conduct their lives and shaping the way that people think. By studying the philosophy of religion and the Islamic faith you will develop an appreciation of the way in which religion shapes individuals' and society's moral and philosophical approaches to living, relationships and dying. You will also have the opportunity to explore, compare and contrast other traditions besides Islam, including Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism.

What will I study?
Throughout the course you will develop your skill of assessing evidence, analysis and discussion and learn how to use evidence to support your own conclusions.

AS: In the first year you will look at the philosophy of religion and the religion of Islam. You will consider arguments used to prove the existence of God and examine the interaction between religious belief and 20th century science. You will study aspects of Islamic belief including the Qur'an, the Five Pillars, worship and the mosque. There may also be the opportunity to study other religious traditions in more detail, such as Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism.

A2: In the second year you will study develop your knowledge of the philosophy of religion and your skills in philosophical enquiry. You will study religious traditions in depth and also compare and contrast different religious traditions.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 examinations at the end of the first year.

A2: 2 examinations at the end of year two and one piece of assessed coursework.

What can I do next?
Religious Studies is useful for studying humanities subjects at University, such as History, Religious Studies and Philosophy. The course develops skills of analysis, interpretation and argument and is therefore a useful subject to support any career or University course. These skills and the understanding of moral issues and different perspectives means it is particularly suitable for those interested in medicine, caring and the media, as well as law.
