Course Content
The course is designed to meet the needs of those intending to pursue a career in equine management and is based at the college competition yard and BHS examination centre. Course content focuses on the practical management of horses and yard management; scientific principles of horse health; anatomy;nutrition; equine business management,event management, conformation & lameness, working in the equine industry, horse husbandry;yard management & supervision. Other options may be available. The course includes a compulsory work experience unit. Students may progress onto this course from the National Certificate Horse Care or having achieved NVQ2 Horse Care or BHS Stage 2. Exemptions may be given to mature applicants with sufficient, relevant industrial experience.
Course Features
Students are timetabled for one week in two on the college yard to receive training and be assessed in practical tasks. The college has a selection of well-schooled horses suitable for dressage, show jumping and side saddle which are ridden in an indoor and an outdoor arena. Students have the opportunity to take part in competitions based at the college.
The college has been approved as a British Horse Society Examination Centre and also offers Riding and Road Safety tests. Students have the opportunity to participate in examination training days delivered by BHS instructors and examiners.
The course includes visits, for example to a state of the art equine veterinary practice, stud, racing yard, showing yard and Badminton Horse Trials.
Career Prospects and Progression
Successful students have the opportunity to progress to Higher Education, for example full or part-time HNC/D or Foundation Degree courses, or to enter careers such as yard management, stud work or advisory services.

Assessment is by means of assignments, practical assessments and external short answer written exam.
