This free course will help you improve your skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification: City &Guilds Functional Skills English qualification at Entry Level, Level 1 and level 2. The programme is designed to:Help you at workRefresh your skills in reading, writing and verbal communicationImprove your chances of getting a job or changing careerHelp you with ordinary activities such as writing letters and helping your children with their school work.Build your confidenceDevelop your English skills to enable you to progress onto other courses e.g. GCSEsThe course will cover a range of topics, such as punctuation, spelling, grammar, reading, speaking and listening strategies. Functional Skills English is about using English in the real world, so these topics will be put into an everyday, practical context so that you can demonstrate that you can use your knowledge outside of the course.

Course programme



There will be a mixture of whole class work, small group work and directed self-study to meet your needs. Practising what you have learnt during your lessons will improve your chance of success. Your tutor will give you homework on a regular basis and will recommend books, websites etc so you can study independently.



You could progress on to a Maths course, move on to GCSE English or widen your skills to include Computing.

Additional information

You will need a pen/pencil and paper to make notes and also an A4 ring binder to keep your work and handouts together. Your tutor may recommend a suitable course book to enhance your learning.
