This practical course will introduce you to furniture design today.
It’s ideal for anyone who might be considering a future at design college, who has an interest in furniture, interiors or spatial design and who wants to add unique work to their portfolio.
The course will begin with an introduction to the history of modern furniture design.
You’ll learn about designers and the methods and materials they’ve developed, and how pieces have become icons of modernity.
You’ll then quickly move on to practical design projects, where you’ll be encourage to develop your own approach to furniture design combined with ideas about how to present your work in a professional way.
To support your designing you’ll visit our furniture making workshops and see examples of materials being used today.

About this course
By the end of the course you’ll have a sketchbook of ideas and examples of concept development, which will be perfect additions to a portfolio.
You’ll also have a prototype scale or lifesize model (either completed or in development to continue working on after the course).
You’ll also leave with an understanding of contemporary furniture design and designers, which will be useful should you wish to continue your studies further.
